Trauma and PTSD

You deserve to heal and regain your life!

Stop feeling alone and isolated. You deserve to live your fullest life.

Learning to heal wounds from trauma can feel overwhelming and daunting. At times it can leave you feeling lost, isolated and alone.

Many people struggling with trauma may also struggle with:

  • Struggles sleeping/Nightmares
  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Loss of Appetite/Overeating
  • Health issues
  • Brain Fog
  • Fear of going places
  • Isolation

There is hope! You are not alone!

According to Mental Health America, 6 in 10 people have suffered from a traumatic experience. We at HRWC believe that this number is probably closer to 9 in 10 or maybe even 10 out of 10, if we understand the true definition of trauma.

Trauma can be experienced as:

  • “Big T” trauma – sexual assault, childhood abuse, domestic violence, car accidents, etc.
  • “Little t” trauma is referred to as anything a person may experience as traumatic. This can be things like an argument with a partner, failing a test, feeling inadequate at a party, etc.

NO trauma is too small or too big to work through! Trauma is trauma. It doesn’t matter if you experienced Big T or Little t trauma, it may continue to affect your life in various ways. We believe the way that it affects us the most is through our bodies.

If you are struggling with trauma or PTSD you know fully that your body often speaks for you before your thoughts even have a chance to react. When your bodies suffer a traumatic event, it remembers and stores this information in your body and will send off signals that you are not okay. It may be a smell, a sound, a place that ignites our bodies sympathetic nervous system- or fight, flight, freeze response.

These signals can be things like:

  • Increase in your heart rate
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Feeling tingling, stiffness, or pins and needles in your body
  • Feeling sick to your stomach and sometimes even actually getting sick
  • Loss of appetite or desire to overeat
  • Muscle tension
  • Restlessness
  • Hives
  • Feeling like your body temperature either drops or increases
  • Sweating

All of these body signals alert your mind to the fear by creating:

  • Racing thoughts
  • Worry, anxiety and dread
  • Inability to stop the thoughts from flooding into your brain
  • Dissociation
  • Panic attacks

Mind-Body Connection

At HRWC, we believe that in order to heal from trauma we must first understand how our body’s physiological symptoms will influence our mental health AND vice versa…how our thoughts and emotions can influence our body’s physiological responses.

We wholeheartedly believe in what is called the Mind-Body Connection. This means that we believe that our body is one interconnected system. If we only try and approach the trauma through healing our thoughts and emotions, we are not going to affect the bodies’ whole system. This is why we use treatments like EMDR, somatic therapy, and mind-body centered approaches to truly help your mind AND your body heal from the trauma.

Here at HRWC we believe that we can help you learn how to read and understand the signals your body is sending you. We will help you learn how to be in control of either turning down the volume of the signals or how to turn the signals off completely. We believe that you can learn how to be in control of your body again so that you can be in control of your thoughts and emotions.

Healing from trauma is no easy task! But if you are ready to put in the work to truly heal and lift your trauma, please give us a call. We know we can help you gain back power and control of your life!
